Why the Time is NOW to Shift Towards A Strength-Based Approach

For too long, the field of education has focused on what's wrong with students, staff, and even parents. Deficit thinking is the culprit. It has created a powerful narrative within education. At times, this narrative seems too enormous to shift away from because it's difficult to unlearn harmful patterns and because the majority of dismantling deficit thinking depends on one's ability to self-reflect and self-correct. Now, more than ever, is the time to shift away from what's wrong to what's strong. In this session, with Dr. Byron M. McClure, you will be inspired and energized to begin practically implementing a strength-based approach, both professionally and personally.

Learner Objectives
The purpose of this session is to help participants develop the knowledge, mindsets, and skills needed to…
1. Describe at least 3 key aspects of a strength-based approach
2. Identify common ways deficit thinking shows up in your practice
3. Explain the benefits of using a strength-based approach.
4. Apply strategies to begin building and understanding your strengths
