The NSTU has instituted, with the partnership of the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, a Lieutenant Governor Award for Teaching Excellence. The purpose of the Award is to honour the teaching profession through the recognition of an individual who exemplifies excellence in Nova Scotia teaching. The NSTU is responsible to develop and fund the criteria, selection process and Award process.

Purpose
The Lieutenant Governor’s Teaching Award was instituted by the Honourable Myra A. Freeman, CM, ONS, MSM., in partnership with the Nova Scotia Teachers Union to celebrate the positive influence teachers have on the students and communities they serve. His Honour, Brigadier General the Honourable J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret’d) Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, re-established this award in 2013.
Each year a teacher will be selected to represent the teaching profession in Nova Scotia. The recipient will exemplify the outstanding leadership, dedication, commitment, and achievement by teachers to the youth of our province within our public schools and the Community College to foster the growth of their students, their communities and their profession.
Eligibility
The teacher representative must be a member of the NSTU and be a currently active teacher or administrator in the Nova Scotia public school system or Community College.
Selection Process
All candidates must be nominated by active teachers or administrators. The nomination form must be completed by the nominators, briefly describing the nominee’s contributions to students, school community and/or community at large, and the teaching profession, that qualify the nominee to be an excellent representative for teaching practice in Nova Scotia.
The Selection Committee shall be comprised of a representative appointed by the Lieutenant Governor and members of the executive of the Retired Teachers Organization of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union. The Selection Committee will forward recommendations to the NSTU President for approval. The President will forward the NSTU teacher representative nominee to the Lieutenant Governor.
Presentation
Each year the Lieutenant Governor, as patron of the award, hosts an awards recognition ceremony in cooperation with the NSTU President, at a mutually agreed upon time and location.
Award
The recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Teaching Award will receive a framed certificate from the Lieutenant Governor and a memento.
